"Gatasan" 2024 Perspectives: Good or Bad in the Age of Social Media
This is purely my insight into what is happening with social media content creation in the Philippines and how the Philippines has become the "GATASAN" of the world.
I've been seeing this word across social media platforms recently, particularly due to a situation involving the popular Paresan business owner "Diwata." His business attracted a diverse crowd, including vloggers, TV personalities, brands, entrepreneurs, and others who simply wanted to eat. However, many of these individuals seemed to be taking advantage of his business's popularity by posting about it on social media to gain views and then just leaving.
That's just a brief background on how this terminology has popped up in the internet world, and I think it will continue to do so.
What is GATASAN?
It doesn't have a definite meaning, but in my own understanding, "gatasan" is a Filipino slang/figurative term that means taking advantage by exploiting or clinging to someone or something for money.
To better understand the word, "gatasan" is like "Parasite," "Leech," "Gold digging," or "Mooching."
Taking a look at the synonyms, it seems like "gatasan" only denotes negative connotations because it is... way back in the 1990s. LOL, it's 2024, can we now consider "gatasan" as some kind of social media tactic, or is it still something that denotes bad character for a Filipino born with solid morality?
I've created a list outlining my take on the two concepts of 'gatasan.' I'll share my thoughts on why it's seen as a not-so-great trait, causing problems in society. But at the same time, I'll list down my thoughts on why I see 'gatasan' as a smart move in the world of social media, bringing benefits to everyone involved.
Gatasan as a Filipino Bad Characteristic:
1. Exploiting Others: "Gatasan" is all about taking advantage of people, which is just not fair and shows a lack of respect for others.
2. Not Doing the Right Thing: It's like doing something wrong just to benefit yourself, without caring about how it affects others. It's not cool.
3. Making Things Worse: When everyone is only thinking about themselves and trying to get ahead, it makes it hard for people to trust each other and work together.
4. Missing Out on Real Opportunities: By focusing on short-term gains through "gatasan," we might miss out on real chances to grow and succeed in better ways.
5. Giving Us a Bad Name: When "gatasan" becomes normal, it makes us look bad as Filipinos. It's not the kind of reputation we want to have.
Gatasan as a Social Media Tactic:
1. Getting Noticed: Sometimes, using "gatasan" tactics can help get attention and make more people see what you're doing online.
2. Meeting New People:** By teaming up with popular folks online, "gatasan" can open doors to new friendships and partnerships.
3. Building Your Brand: Working with well-known personalities or riding on popular trends can help build up your brand and make more people trust you.
4. Making Money: For content creators, "gatasan" moves might mean more cash through sponsorships, ads, and other deals.
5. Keeping Up in the Online World:Social media is super competitive, and sometimes using "gatasan" tactics is just the way to stay in the game and keep growing.
So, after diving deep into the 'gatasan' dilemma, the big question remains: is it really good or bad? We've seen how it can be a shady move, causing trouble in our society. But then, there's this other side where it's like this genius trick on social media, bringing in tons of benefits for everyone involved.
But here's where I stand: no matter how shiny it looks on the surface, 'gatasan' still stinks. Even if it brings in fame and fortune online, it's just not right to take advantage of others. That's my take, plain and simple.
Now, I'm curious—what's your view on this whole 'gatasan' situation? Do you think it's just a smart move in the social media game, or do you see it as a sign of something deeper going wrong?...
