Traveling solo can be an incredibly enriching experience. It's all about stepping out of your comfort zone, exploring new places, and meeting fascinating people along the way. Recently, I embarked on a solo adventure to Kalinga, Benguet, to meet the famous mambabatok (traditional tattoo artist) Apo Whang-Od and get my first tattoo. Here’s a glimpse into my journey and why you should consider making this trip too.

Kalinga is a province in the Cordillera region of the Philippines, known for its stunning mountain landscapes and rich cultural heritage. As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the breathtaking scenery—lush green valleys, terraced rice fields, and towering mountains. It felt like stepping into another world, one that was peaceful and profoundly connected to nature.

Joining a Travel Group

To make the journey easier, I decided to join a group of fellow travelers heading to Kalinga. This was a great way to meet new people and share the experience with others who were just as excited about the adventure. From Manila, we took a bus to Tabuk City, the capital of Kalinga. The journey was long but filled with anticipation and excitement. From Tabuk, we hired a jeepney to take us to Buscalan, the remote village where Apo Whang-Od lives.

Meeting Apo Whang-Od

Apo Whang-Od is a living legend, known for her skill in traditional Kalinga tattooing. At over 100 years old, she’s the oldest and last remaining mambabatok from her generation. Her tattoos are done using the traditional hand-tapping method, using a thorn, a stick, and soot. Each tattoo tells a story and is a symbol of strength, bravery, and beauty.

When I finally reached Buscalan, the village was bustling with tourists and locals. The air was filled with the rhythmic sound of tattoo tapping. I was both nervous and excited as I waited for my turn. Meeting Apo Whang-Od was a humbling experience. Despite her age, she radiated warmth and kindness. She smiled as she meticulously applied the tattoo, each tap resonating with history and tradition.

Getting My First Tattoo

Choosing the design was a significant part of the process. I wanted something that reflected my journey and the spirit of Kalinga. I chose a simple yet meaningful design that symbolized strength and courage. The process was not as painful as I had anticipated, and the result was a beautiful, intricate tattoo that I will carry with me forever.

Exploring Kalinga

After getting my tattoo, I spent some time exploring Buscalan and its surroundings. The village is nestled in the mountains, offering spectacular views and a chance to experience the local way of life. I hiked through terraced rice fields, visited local homes, and learned about the customs and traditions of the Kalinga people. The hospitality and warmth of the locals made the experience even more memorable.

The Return Journey

Leaving Buscalan was bittersweet. The experience had been transformative, and I felt a deep connection to the place and its people. The journey back to Manila gave me plenty of time to reflect on the trip. Traveling solo had allowed me to immerse myself fully in the experience, and meeting Apo Whang-Od was a highlight that I will cherish forever.

Tips for Solo Travelers

  1. Plan Ahead: Research your route and accommodation options. Kalinga is remote, so make sure you have all necessary supplies.

  3. Stay Safe: Solo travel can be safe if you take precautions. Inform someone about your travel plans and stay connected with loved ones.
  4. Embrace the Experience: Traveling alone allows you to connect with new people and places on a deeper level. Embrace the journey and be open to new experiences.
